About the piece
It is one of the 24 Preludes Op. 28, completed in 1839. It moves like a slow mazurka: eight little phrases, all with the same rhythm.
Precisely because it is so short and singing, it is often the first Chopin people learn.
How to practise it
- Every phrase has the same rhythm: learn the first one well, the others are variations.
- The left hand plays the bass, the right plays chords with the melody on top: bring it out.
- The big chord in bar twelve can be rolled if your hand can't reach it.
- Play it slowly and calmly: it is a moment of stillness.
