About the piece
It is the finale of the Sonata Op. 27 No. 2 (1801), the same sonata as the famous first movement. It is in sonata form, with two themes and a development, and one of Beethoven's most dramatic finales.
It opens with very fast right-hand arpeggios climbing to two sharp chords; a second, more singing but still restless theme follows.
How to practise it
- Practise the opening arpeggios slowly, group by group, letting the wrist follow the hand.
- The accented chords are short and firm: then relax your hand immediately.
- Use very low speeds (30–50%): this piece is about stamina.
- Learn the first theme and its return together: they are almost identical.
